As 2011 draws to a close we are amazed at how quickly the year has gone – Royal Weddings, Rugby World Cup, England Cricketers became Number 1 in World and David Cameron exercised a veto in Europe just in time for extra promotion for Meryl Streep’s film about Margaret Thatcher!  Who knows what 2012 will bring as we head into our very own Olympic Year and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

We have had a very busy year at More Than Mobility and we hope that you have been happy with the service you have received.  We are very grateful for the notes we receive from customers highlighting where a member of staff has gone that extra mile.  We always want to hear from you about service, good or bad because we will always act on your feedback.  This year we have had lots of positive endorsement about our approach to customer service and we would like to thank our teams who work hard and care deeply about the job they do.

Private Occupational Therapist Services

As many of you will be aware, Occupational Therapists are professionals who help people find ways to do the things they want to do but might struggle with as a result of reduced mobility.  Whilst many people will have access to an “OT” via the NHS there is a trend towards private consultations, with appointments that can be tailored for your convenience, where you can always see the same person and where you are completely in control of the focus of the consultation.  To meet this growing demand More Than Mobility has announced an exciting partnership with The OT Practice to connect our customers to a leading nationwide OT practice.

A full Private In-Home OT Assessment with a written report and recommendations is £375 (special offer for More Than Mobility’s customers).  We understand that this is quite a lot of money but when you consider the cost of equipment we believe it can be a tremendous in determining what products will make a difference to everyday life.  The OT’s are there to help you keep doing what you want to do for longer and their experience is invaluable.

For families living long distances apart, a report can help crystalise needs before they become urgent and help the family put a plan in place.  

We would just like to be clear that the OT Practice operate independently so there is no requirement or pressure to buy products – should you wish to ask More Than Mobility for a quote we will be delighted to do so but you can use your report to support your buying decision from any supplier of your choice.  We hope of course that our keen prices will make us your first stop!

Yes it is that time of the year again and the run up to Christmas.  Where has the year gone?   To help you with finding the right mobility product gift ideas for your friends and family we have launched our Christmas Gifts Ideas area which will support you to find a gift that is both useful and practical.

So we are well into November.  The clocks have gone back (remember Spring forward, Fall back) and Remembrance Sunday is just past.

One of our team, last weekend, attended an outdoor service at the local war memorial near to her home.  Whether by design (we hope so) or circumstance the planes that usually roar overhead were nowhere to be seen and as 11 o’clock struck and the officials stopped the traffic on the busy south circular there was a perfect silence on a cold clear day.

A still moment when the younger attendees, of whom there were many, would have thought more naturally of the victims of Afghanistan or Iraq but the older contingent would still be remembering uncles or perhaps grandfathers who fought in the World Wars. 

The march past, with a small group of local veterans (eye’s right) was as moving as the long parade at the Cenotaph  – perhaps even more so because these men are neighbours, briefly seen in a different context as they lined up and marched, straightened up as their long ago training kicked in.  In the mobility business we are very conscious of the impact that injuries have – whether sustained in war, accidents or through health conditions and this time of the year strengthens our commitment to provide the best possible service we can.

As usual here at More Than Mobility we have been collecting for the Poppy appeal and, as discussed with customers, we do not move on to Christmas promotions until the nation has paid its respects.  Now we move on and in the months ahead will be highlighting some of the other charities we support.

For some of us perhaps all the intense coverage around the life and career of Steve Jobs, Apple may have seemed a bit perplexing.  After all he did not invent the cure for some terrible disease and while he was clearly a gifted individual he was well rewarded commercially for his success.  However, when we dig a little deeper it seems to us that his legacy is all about making bits of our life just a bit better or more fun – he made technology accessible and intuitive (as those of us who love Macs will testify) and his studio Pixar made many of us, our children and our grandchildren laugh out loud at clever, exciting, funny and clean humour.  Not a bad legacy to leave – while each of us might be able to do that a bit in our own part of the world he was able to do it on a global scale.  Bringing a smile to millions, out loud in a cinema or just in private when a technical thing just works, we will miss his brilliance and hope like mad that his successors can keep up the standard.

There is apparently a man who draws in his sleep – the BBC website archive is showing some lovely drawings but apparently he has no recollection of them at all.  In spite of attending sleep clinics no one is any the wiser.  In a nice touch he is auctioning some of the drawings for charity.

With sunny intervals apparently the best we can hope for over the Bank Holiday weekend we got thinking about Sunny Intervals that don’t necessarily depend on the weather.  Those little moments that make you smile – the American tourist this week (complete with golf clubs) who was asking on the train whether the weather was generally good in Aberdeen … his fellow passengers let him down gently … or the kids queuing for the back-to-school bus in their brand new uniforms with cuffs to their knuckles to allow for growing room.

Of course the flip side of back-to-school is that shoe shops are in general best avoided for the next week or so (surely kids feet don’t grow that much in the final week of the holidays?  Couldn’t mums spread it out a bit?!) and the supermarkets get jammed with the post-holiday stocking up brigade.

With August just around the corner ….. this would, of course, normally  be the start of media “silly season” when Parliament has broken up and journalists struggle to find enough to fill their pages. Suffice it to say that we wish that had been the case this week – with the  unspeakably sad stories of this week in Oslo, Norway we wish it had simply been the usual daft tales that the papers usually drag out at this time of year.

Let’s hope that with the non-royal Zara Philips wedding this weekend there are some lovely joyful stories to start August in better spirit – apparently there was a party on Friday night on the Royal Yacht Britannia which is now permanently moored in Edinburgh, it will have been like coming home for some of the revellers!

This time of year is so associated with schools breaking up and families heading off on holiday that sometimes we forget that actually the majority of people are not heading off on holiday abroad but spending their time in the UK, often taking day trips spread out over the summer.

The UK has such a wealth of beautiful spots and fantastic treasures that we can enjoy here at home.  If you are worried that you might not be up to the walks do check with the particular location in advance as many of them offer mobility scooters to rent so that you can all make the most of your visit.  Places like the RHS gardens at Wisely even have “top up power points “ throughout the site so you can boost your battery charge whether you have brought your own or hired out a mobility scooter.

Hiring for short periods like this can be a very good way to see how you get on with a mobility scooter and how it works for you when out with family or friends.  It may be that you really only need a bit of extra help when it is a full day out or it may be that you realise that your everyday life could be enhanced with a mobility scooter.  Remember if you find that you particularly like the model you have hired and would like one for your own use we can usually source them for you at great prices and quick turnaround . If you are heading off on holiday and staying away from home it can be useful to have items delivered directly to your holiday address.  We are happy to do that for customers so do give us a call and let us know if we can help.  Every year we find that someone urgently needs a replacement battery for their mobility scooter because they quite understandably are using it more on holiday and it may only then become apparent that a new one is needed.  We’re happy to help but do flag that this is not your “home credit card” address just in case the security processing flags a discrepancy!  On a more discreet note we also know that products such as waterproof mattress covers or incontinence products are bulky so if it is easier to get us to ship to your holiday address just let us know.
