Diabetes Week 14th – 20th June

Diabetes Week is an annual UK-wide campaign devoted to raising awareness of diabetes and to raise money to help fund research into the condition. More Than Mobility realises that living with diabetes can sometimes feel like an uphill battle – but with the right help, information and care you can still get the most out of life.  This year national Diabetes Week runs from 14 June and reminds people with diabetes that they are not alone and is focused on all the things that people who have or care for someone with diabetes can do to make the most of life.

Diabetes UK estimated that there are 3.2 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and an estimated 630,000 people who have the condition but don’t know about it.

Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in her 30s, Caroline felt her world had ended. “It hit me very hard. I felt like I was left to fend for myself,” says Caroline.  Then Caroline discovered her Local Diabetes UK Group and decided she should attend because she didn’t know much about the condition and she didn’t know anyone else with diabetes.

There were 15 people in the group at the time and they held their meetings in a local church. Caroline admits that when she attended her first meeting she questioned whether it was right for her. But it didn’t take long for her to warm to the group, view the full story here.

There are also many other ways that Diabetes UK can help:

Dealing with diabetes can be daunting, whether you’re newly diagnosed, an old hand, or even if it’s someone you know who has the condition. Having someone to talk to can make all the difference

The healthy lifestyle roadshows help people find out their risk of Type 2 diabetes. They also provide information on eating well and being active for people at risk and also those living with the condition.

Diabetes UK groups offer people living with diabetes a chance to meet and share experiences with others. They are all run by volunteers, and typically meet on a monthly basis

If you want to meet other people living with diabetes, to share and learn in a relaxed and fun environment, then our events for children, young people and families with diabetes are for you

Diabetes UK Advocacy Service provides advocacy to people with diabetes on issues in connection with their diabetes. We also help friends, family and carers acting on behalf of people with diabetes
