Get Into Disability Sport To Help Boost Your Independence

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015 by morethan

Here at More Than Mobility we know that disabled people are less likely to take part in sport with only one in six playing sport regularly compared to one in three non-disabled people. The English Federation of Disability Sport are keen to change this in order to enable disabled people to view taking part in sport as a viable lifestyle choice.

Disability Sport ranges from entry level to international competition with many layers between. Many disabled sports people get involved as a hobby or interest. Some compete professionally or at the highest levels. There is a sport and a place for everyone. Find out about disability sports events in your area by clicking here.

Why get into sport?

Being active is a great way to improve your health, clear your mind and put you into a better mood. There are sports clubs around the UK that cater for all kinds of disabilities. Many clubs and sports centres offer free taster sessions so you can try different sports to find out which is your favourite! There are over 400 inclusive gyms around the country with specially designed equipment so you’ll be working up a sweat in no time.

If you’re a budding Paralympian, there are plenty of opportunities to get spotted. Join a sports club with professional coaches to reach your full potential.

Do I need Experience?

Any kind of physical movement is beneficial to your health, so don’t think you have to be a great athlete to get involved. If you’re not quite ready to join a club, working out at home is a good starting point. If you’re keen to get active but the prospect of entering the world of sport seems daunting, don’t worry as there are plenty of great resources out there to help you get started.

National Disability Sport Organisations (NDSOs)

  • British Blind Sport (BBS) – BBS is the leading voice for people with visual impairments in the world of sport.
  • British Wheelchair Athletics Association (BWAA) – BWAA work with athletes interested in Seated Throws (Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Club), and pentathlon.
  • British Wheelchair Racing Association (BWRA) – WRA promotes the involvement of disabled people in wheelchair racing.
  • Cerebral Palsy Sport (CP Sport) – CP Sport promotes and seeks to increase opportunities for disabled people, in particular people with Cerebral Palsy, to participate in athletics.
  • Mencap Sport (England) - Working with Governing Bodies of Sport and other sports providers to increase and improve opportunities at all levels, through training and partnership work
  • LimbPower- LimbPower is the National Disability Sports Organisation helping amputees and the limb impaired reach their sporting potential.

More Than Mobility would like to support anyone wanting to regain their independence and fitness and we recommend the popular pedal exerciser with digital display for when you want to work up a sweat at home!

Best wishes

Diabetes Week 14th – 20th June

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015 by morethan

Diabetes Week is an annual UK-wide campaign devoted to raising awareness of diabetes and to raise money to help fund research into the condition. More Than Mobility realises that living with diabetes can sometimes feel like an uphill battle – but with the right help, information and care you can still get the most out of life.  This year national Diabetes Week runs from 14 June and reminds people with diabetes that they are not alone and is focused on all the things that people who have or care for someone with diabetes can do to make the most of life.

Diabetes UK estimated that there are 3.2 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and an estimated 630,000 people who have the condition but don’t know about it.

CAROLINE’S STORY

Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in her 30s, Caroline felt her world had ended. “It hit me very hard. I felt like I was left to fend for myself,” says Caroline.  Then Caroline discovered her Local Diabetes UK Group and decided she should attend because she didn’t know much about the condition and she didn’t know anyone else with diabetes.

There were 15 people in the group at the time and they held their meetings in a local church. Caroline admits that when she attended her first meeting she questioned whether it was right for her. But it didn’t take long for her to warm to the group, view the full story here.

There are also many other ways that Diabetes UK can help:

Dealing with diabetes can be daunting, whether you’re newly diagnosed, an old hand, or even if it’s someone you know who has the condition. Having someone to talk to can make all the difference

The healthy lifestyle roadshows help people find out their risk of Type 2 diabetes. They also provide information on eating well and being active for people at risk and also those living with the condition.

Diabetes UK groups offer people living with diabetes a chance to meet and share experiences with others. They are all run by volunteers, and typically meet on a monthly basis

If you want to meet other people living with diabetes, to share and learn in a relaxed and fun environment, then our events for children, young people and families with diabetes are for you

Diabetes UK Advocacy Service provides advocacy to people with diabetes on issues in connection with their diabetes. We also help friends, family and carers acting on behalf of people with diabetes

Find out about Diabetes UK’s activities in your local area

Here at More Than Mobility we don’t want any disability to stop you from living independently or to disrupt your lifestyle. We therefore provide a wide range of disability and mobility products to suit your specific needs. So do visit our website and take a look at some of our products on offer today!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2015 by morethan

Father’s Day will be celebrated on 21 June 2015 in the UK, as well as a host of other countries around the world. Father’s Day is the chance for dads to enjoy the limelight with a day dedicated to showering them with gifts, cards or taking them for a memorable day out.

The idea originated in America and has been officially celebrated there on the third Sunday in June since 1966. The exact origins of what we now know as Father’s Day are disputed, though we do know the movement for a day which celebrated fatherhood began roughly 100 years ago.

A pint of beer or a pair of socks is the easy way out; why not say it like you mean it this Father’s Day? Whether your main man is chilled-out, or a fashionable father, there are plenty of gifts on our website to make your dad feel like a hero.

Whether you want to blow the budget or you’re looking for cheap gift ideas, we’ve got all the bases covered.

Give your dad that pat on the back for all the hard work! We have really comfortable Rise and Recline Chairs perfect for any man on Father’s Day! Starting from £395 these are really good as they help a person to get up in a standing position.

We also have elegant Fireside Chairs starting from £260.  With pocket sprung seating, padded arm rests and filled in sides, our fireside chairs offers maximum comfort.

Or if you are on a tighter budget we have a wide range of small gift ideas suitable for that special man including daily living aids, moving and handling aids and men’s clothing.  Take a look and shop today!

Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Month!

Monday, June 1st, 2015 by morethan

It’s June and Motor Neurone Disease Association is holding a special month of awareness.   More Than Mobility are supporters of this charity here in the UK and the Motor Neurone Disease Association and would like us to help raise awareness of this terrible disease.

MND is a life-changing illness and help is available for everyone, whether you are living with MND or close to someone who has been diagnosed. The association says that between 80 and 95 per cent of people with MND will experience communication problems and with that in mind is working hard to ensure they all have their voices heard. The association says that people with MND find it hard to explain the condition to people, including healthcare professionals.

People with MND say that spreading the word can be a powerful way to keep their voice, when their own might be getting fainter.

Facts about MND are:

  • MND is a fatal, rapidly progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.
  • MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time.
  • Half of people with MND will die within 14 months of diagnoses.
  • There is no cure.
  • For more information go to: www.mndassociation.org

There are lots of ways to get involved during the month including helping to raise money to support people suffering from this condition. You can simply donate, become a member of the group to show your support, or you can take part in fundraising events.

More Than Mobility would like to make sure that the journey through Motor Neurone Disease is as comfortable as possible so we have special offers on mobility products this month including:
