More Than Mobility’s Guide To Keeping Warm This Winter

Monday, November 30th, 2015 by morethan

Research has shown that as we get older, the risk of heart attack or stroke greatly increases in cool temperatures, so it’s important to keep both you and your home warm.

Living in the warm keeps the body temperature up, which helps to protect against the effects of the cold outside. So it’s important to keep your home warm and to dress up warm when you go outside.

Tips to keep yourself warm this winter:

  • Wear several thin layers, rather than one thick layer. This is because they trap warm air close to the body, woolly clothes or thermal clothes are ideal.
  • A lot of heat is lost through the head and neck, so if you’re chilly indoors, try wearing a hat and scarf.
  • For cold toes, remember to put thick socks on and preferably slippers too.
  • Draw your curtains, as soon as it gets dark to stop the heat escaping and the draughts coming in.
  • Use hot water bottles or electric blankets to warm the bed, however never use them together as this can be dangerous.  Always read the instructions when using electrical goods.
  • If you’re sitting down, a shawl or blanket will provide extra warmth. You should also try to keep your feet up, because air is cooler at ground level.
  • Wear warm clothes in bed. When it’s really cold, wear thermal underwear, bed socks and even a hat.

Ward off those winter chills in the home;

  • Have your heating system serviced and chimney swept regularly.
  • Check your water stopcock is working properly.
  • Always check the local weather forecast so you can prepare accordingly.
  • Get a keyhole cover – it should only cost a couple of pounds and will help keep the draughts out in cold weather.

For more information on keeping warm this winter please visit the BBC website.

More Than Mobility are here to help with our range of Bed-Jackets, Fleecy Wraps & Capes and warm nightwear for both men and women. Our bed jackets are perfect for keeping the chills off your shoulders and arms when reading, watching TV or sitting at the computer.

Check Out Our Rise and Recliner Buyers Guide!

Sunday, November 29th, 2015 by morethan

Are you thinking about buying a Rise & Recline Chair (sometimes called a Riser Recliner Chair) but are confused on the various options and types available?  If so then take a look at our specific Rise & Recline Chair Buyers Guide which can help guide you through the various options and breakdown what they do and the points to consider when purchasing one of these chairs.

Electric rise and recline chairs are ideal purchases for people who suffer from mobility issues as they allow the user to get in and out of the chair with ease.  Also for people who spend a lot of time in an armchair the additional seating positions can reduce the risk of pressure sores and allow time for an afternoon snooze!

They are simple to use and are operated by a handset.  Just a touch of a button lifts or lowers the chair to your preferred position giving you as much comfort

Some key points to consider when purchasing a riser recliner chair:

  • There are two types of rise and recline chairs available, those with a single motor and those with a dual motor system. A single motor rise and recline chair controls the backrest and foot plate at the same time, while a dual motor rise and recline chair allows you to operate both sections of the chair individually. Chairs with a dual motor system are usually more expensive, but offer more positions so that you can find your ideal seating position.
  • Make sure the dimensions of the chair e.g. seat height, seat width and depth match the size of the user to ensure adequate support and comfort.
  • Check the maximum recommended weight limit for the chair.  Petite and heavier user chair options are available.
  • Remember these chairs will need more space when extended – however some you can save space with a wall-hugger style.
  • Establish where your chair will plug into the mains to avoid obstructing walkways or trailing wires.  Most chairs also come with a battery back-up feature in case of a power cut.
  • Consider your upholstery i.e. there is a wide choice of leather or fabric to match the style of your home.

More Than Mobility is a leading UK supplier of Rise & Recline Chairs and has a wide selection of the most popular and affordable chairs.  We have over 10 years’ experience in selling these chairs so you can be sure of a professional service with experienced staff.   All products come with a minimum 12 month warranty and a choice of free courier delivery or specialist engineer delivery/set up available.

If you would like a copy of the Rise & Recline Chair Buyers Guide you can download this online or call us on 0800 046 3949 and we can pop a copy in the post to you.  Also if you have any questions or need some advice do not hesitate to give us a call.

World Diabetes Day: Saturday November 14th 2015

Friday, November 13th, 2015 by morethan

World Diabetes Day, occurs on the 14th November every year and has become a globally-celebrated event to increase awareness about diabetes. World Diabetes Day was jointly introduced by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The global diabetes awareness campaign was introduced amidst concern over an escalating diabetes epidemic.

Comprising hundreds of campaigns, activities, screenings, lecture, meetings and more, World Diabetes Day has been successful spreading the message about diabetes and raising awareness for the condition.

World Diabetes Day: Healthy Living starts at breakfast

The theme of World Diabetes Day is healthy living and this year there is a focus on starting each day right by having a healthy breakfast.

A healthy breakfast should help blood sugar levels from getting too high and should keep you full through the morning. Whilst cereal and toast may be cheap, these options typically raise blood sugar levels rapidly and may leave you hungry again before lunch.

Why is November 14th World Diabetes Day?

November 14th is a significant date in the diabetes calendar because it marks the birthday of the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting.

Banting discovered insulin in 1922, alongside Charles Best.

On each World Diabetes Day, famous buildings and monuments all over the world are lit up in blue. This powerful and striking image helps to spread the message about World Diabetes Day to diabetics and non-diabetics alike.

Famous buildings that have been lit up in the past on World Diabetes Day include the Sears Tower, the London Eye and Brisbane City Hall.

To get involved please:

Please visit the IDF website for more information and how else to get involved.

Here at More Than Mobility we do not want any disability to stop you from living independently or to disrupt your lifestyle.  We therefore provide a wide range of disability and mobility products to suit your specific needs from mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking aids, rise and recline chairs to a range of daily living aids all suitable for people with diabetes.

In the wake of last month’s 5p plastic bag charge have you considered our innovative shopping trolley!

Wednesday, November 11th, 2015 by morethan

From last month shoppers are being charged 5p for every new plastic bag they use at large stores in England. Therefore have you considered getting our innovative shopping trolley with a built in seat and kerb/stair climber to help you with your shopping as well as allowing you to take a seat when needed?   Perfect for customers suffering from mobility issues and also saves on those shopping bag charges!

Why has the 5p plastic charge happened?

The number of plastic bags handed out by supermarkets in England in 2014 rose to 7.64 billion – 200 million more than in 2013.

Figures collected by waste-reduction body Wrap, on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), show that the figure has steadily increased for the past four years.

Campaigners argue that the bags blight streets, spoil the countryside, and damage wildlife, seas and coastline.

Over the next decade it hopes the charge will create:

  • £60m savings in litter clean-up costs
  • £13m in carbon savings

Where is the money going to?

Initially to the supermarkets. This is not a tax and the money raised by the levy will not go to the government.

Retailers will need to report to ministers about what they do with the money, and the government will publish this information each year.

Does the charge involve all plastic bags?

No – the charge applies only to shops or chains with 250 or more full-time employees. Plastic bags at airport shops or on board trains, planes or ships, will not be included, and neither will paper bags.

There are a few very other specific exemptions. You will not be charged for plastic bags if you’re buying:

  • live aquatic creatures in water
  • unwrapped blades, including axes, knives, and knife and razor blades
  • uncooked meat, poultry or fish
  • prescription medicine
  • unwrapped loose seeds, flowers, bulbs, corns, rhizomes – as in roots, stems and shoots, such as ginger – or goods contaminated by soil, like potatoes or plants
  • unwrapped ready-to-eat food for animal or human consumption – for example, chips, or food sold in containers not secure enough to prevent leakage during normal handling

More Than Mobility would like to support the world’s problem with plastic landfills by showing you this innovative shopping trolley we have for only £32.99.  A great way to visit events or do your shopping with a handy seat whenever needed.  No more struggling up kerbs or steps with heavy old fashioned shoppers as the clever triple wheel stair climber makes short work of steps and kerbs.    A perfect gift to yourself or even a present for a loved one this Christmas!

Remembrance Sunday: This Sunday 8th November 2015

Friday, November 6th, 2015 by morethan

Remembrance Sunday, which falls this year on 8th November is a day for the nation to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.  It is an event close to our company’s heart and one that we feel everyone should get involved by wearing your poppy with pride.

This Sunday is Remembrance Sunday and special events will be taking place across thecountry include the national remembrance at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, central London.   The service to commemorate British and Commonwealth servicemen and women from the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts will start at 11am.

The Queen will pay tribute alongside politicians and representatives of the Armed Forces, Air and Navy as well as High Commissioners of Commonwealth countries.   If you cannot attend a local event close to your home we recommend watching the national event on telly – it never fails to bring a tear to our eye!

Other Remembrance Events taking place this year include:

  • Annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall – Saturday 7th November at 2pm or 7pm.
  • Fields of Remembrance aims to help the public to dedicate a Remembrance Tribute.   Poppies with personal messages are planted in the Fields of Remembrance with each Remembrance tribute carrying a personal message to someone who lost their life in the Service of our country. Fields of Remembrance take place annually in the grounds of Westminster Abbey as well as Cardiff, Wootton Bassett, Belfast, Gateshead and Edinburgh.
  • Flanders’ Fields of Poppies - On Armistice Day this year (11th November), The Royal British Legion is planting a “Flanders Field” of poppies beside the ramparts of the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres to celebrate 100 years since the Flanders’ conflict.

More Than Mobility supports and collects for the Poppy Appeal (run by the British Legion) in our mobility stores.  Do get involved and wear your poppy with pride.
