Cervical Cancer Week! #SmearForSmear 2017

Join this Cervical Cancer Prevention week (22th – 28th January) and share #SmearForSmear to raise awareness of the importance of smear tests in preventing cervical cancer.

Every year in the UK, around 3,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women aged 35 and under.

The facts

  • Every day in the UK 9 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer
  • 3 women lose their lives from the disease every day
  • Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women aged 35
  • 75% of cervical cancers are prevented by cervical screening (smear tests)
  • However 1 in 4 women do not attend this potentially life-saving test

6 Ways to Get Healthy After Christmas and New Year

We have all probably had a bit too much to drink or eat over the last few weeks but now it is time to get back to healthy living! Drinking and eating with family and friends is fun but it does have its cons if you always going over the limit.

Lose weight

One of the most popular New Year resolutions is to lose weight but we all know how difficult it is to commit to especially if want immediate success.   Beware of the quickie cures as it is far better to lose weight in a controlled and healthy way which is therefore more likely to stay off.

Take up an exercise class

If you have taken a break from your usual fitness routine over the holidays or you fancy trying something new, ease yourself back into an exercise schedule by enrolling in a flexible class that will cater to your needs. Click here to find an over 60’s exercise class near you!

Quit alcohol for a month

If you’ve indulged in a Christmas and New Year tipple, or two, consider giving up drink for a month (e.g. Dry January or Dry February) to allow your body to regain a healthy balance. Studies have shown that abstinence for just one month can have a positive effect.

Cut down on the sugar

Stocked up on sugar-filled Christmas treats for your home? Consider cutting down on your sugar intake after New Year to allow your body to recover! As a rule, if a food packet contains a long list of ingredients, sugar is likely to be a dominant component of the product – check the packet before purchase.

Take it easy

Christmas and New Year can be a source of stress as well as cheer. Expectations are high and family tensions can be too. One of the best ways to get back into a healthy routine is to familiarise yourself with a good night’s sleep and your usual methods of relaxation at home. If you’ve noticed that stress has become an issue, use this quieter time of the year to identify possible stress causes and triggers which you can get help for in the year.

Reassess your diet
