Dancing for Exercise!

Monday, April 24th, 2017 by morethan

At More Than Mobility we are big fans of music and dancing and we believe it can be a great stress reliever! From hip-hop to the foxtrot, dance fever is sweeping the nation, fuelled by popular TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and BBC3’s Dancing on Wheels.

Regular dancing is great for losing weight, maintaining strong bones, improving posture and muscle strength, increasing balance and co-ordination, and beating stress.

One of the best things about dancing is that while you’re having fun moving to music and meeting new people, you’re getting all the health benefits of a good workout.

Before you start

Most accredited dance schools hold beginners’ courses and welcome people with disabilities. Dance schools are friendly and a great way to socialise.

Classes can cost as little as £5 – £10 for a 90-minute session. If the first class you try falls short of your expectations, don’t be put off. It’s worth trying a few different classes until you find the right one for you.

Find a dance class

BBC3’s Dancing on Wheels has done wonders for the sport of wheelchair dancing and raised its profile as a recreational activity. Wheelchair dancing is open to people of all abilities, including mixed ability dance partners. For more information and to find a class near you, visit the Wheelchair Dance Sport Association.

If you are looking for a new wheelchair then do take a look at our range of transit wheelchairs and self-propelling wheelchairs that start from as little as £99!

Thursday, April 13th, 2017 by morethan

Here at More Than Mobility we have been long-time supporters of Parkinson’s UK and this year we are supporting again Parkinson’s Awareness Week to help raise awareness about this disease and also promote some suitable mobility products for Parkinson’s sufferers to help everyday tasks.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition. This means that it causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time.  There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s but there are lots of different treatments, therapies and support available to help you manage the condition.

The last significant drug discovery for Parkinson’s was over 50 years old so this year Parkinson’s UK are asking the public to support our research which in turn will help develop better treatments faster.

Visit Parkinson’s UK for information and support and information on how to get involved in the campaign.  Also there are local events taking place across the UK including coffee mornings, sponsored walks, etc. so take a look at the 2017 event map.

Benefits of Walking Daily and Walking Aids

Thursday, April 6th, 2017 by morethan

We recently had some good feedback from Jenreviews.com about one of our previous posts about keeping fit with walking football. Jen has recently completed a detailed, up-to-date 7,000 word guide on 50 amazing health benefits of walking daily, according to science.

To view her full guide you can see it online here or alternatively here are a summary of some of the main benefits to walking daily:

  • Walking can trim your waistline and reduce excess weight
  • Daily walking can improve your heart rate and manage high blood pressure
  • Reduce arthritis pain
  • Improve mental attitude
  • Improve your balance and co-ordination
  • Strengthen your bones
  • Helps build up strength and prevents falls for older persons
  • Helps with regular bathroom habits

Here are More Than Mobility we also recommend that you try to get out and about for a walk each day even if it just around the garden.  If you or a loved one are struggling with walking and are having difficulty getting about and it’s stopping you from doing things you want to do, then do consider getting some walking aids to help.

Walking aids can vary from a walking stick, crutches, cane seats, walking frames (tri-walkers or 4 wheel rollator with seat) or travel walkers.  We offer lightweight aluminium mobility walking aids in a wide range of models and sizes, so you are sure to find the right walking aid for your needs and your budget.
