Thursday, August 31st, 2017 by morethan

Around 9 million people in the UK have some kind of hearing loss and around 900,000 people are severely or profoundly deaf.  This is around 19% of the population or 1 in every 7 persons.

Hearing loss increases sharply with age.  About a third of people aged between 60 – 70 years old and three quarters of the population aged over 70 have some kind of hearing loss.

If you do suffer from hearing issues then please do get in touch with us on 0800 046 3949 and we can put you in touch with a qualified hearing audiologist for a free no obligation hearing test.

Also there is range of products that can help with hearing issues – even simple equipment can mean the difference between living independently and needing someone to look after you. You can buy specialist equipment from our More Than Mobility website that can help with hearing issues.

Under Pillow Vibration Alarm Clock

This tiny alarm will shake you awake without disturbing others in the house. Start your day off with a buzz as opposed to a siren!

Perfect for anyone visually or hearing impaired as this is an alarm you ‘feel’. Simply place under your pillow and the alarm will wake you up by vibrating.

Talking Alarm Clock with Hands & LCD Display
Hear and see the time more clearly! Just press the large top button and this quartz analogue clock will speak the time for those with sight limitations.

For the hard of hearing the large clear clock face shows the right time on its clear analogue face and nifty digital display. Add a choice of three alarm sounds and an optional hourly time announcement for perfect time keeping.

2 in 1 – Home Care Panic Alarm & Wireless Doorbell
This care solution pairs the peace of mind of a care alarm with the functionality of a doorbell.   Great for people with a hearing impairment.  This combined personal panic alarm and doorbell can be used as an emergency paging alarm, as either the bell push or panic alarm will send a signal to sound the bell and flash the light to aid the hard of hearing.

Thursday, August 24th, 2017 by morethan

You might have read or seen TV adverts for Intelligent Voice Recognition Technology (IVR) from Amazon or Google and wondered what it was or was it relevant for me.  Well IVR has come a long way in the last few years and now some of these new smart devices allow you to carry out daily tasks via hands-free convenience through voice control.  This means you can ask the device to answer questions, read books, play music, control lights switches, etc. which his particularly useful if you suffer from any kind of mobility or visual disability.

The two main ones you might have heard about are:

Amazon Echo is a smart speaker which consists of a 9.25” tall cylinder speaker with a seven-piece microphone array. The device connects to the voice-controlled intelligent personal assistant service Alexa, which responds to the name “Alexa”. This “wake word” can be changed by the user to “Amazon”, “Echo” or “Computer”. The device is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audio books, and providing weather, traffic and other real time information. It can also control several smart devices using itself as a home automation hub.

Importance of Mobility Scooter Insurance

Monday, August 14th, 2017 by morethan

Comprehensive insurance cover for mobility scooters isn’t currently a legal requirement in the UK, and so it is all too often overlooked by mobility scooter users. decided to launch a petition following a spate of thefts and accidents involving individuals on mobility scooters. The firm’s director, Jason Tate, explains more;

“We hear of scooter thefts and vandalism on an almost daily basis,” he said, “not to mention incidents of people getting injured in accidents and collisions. The theft of an expensive scooter can result in the owner being left housebound, and we’ve even heard of people being forced to sell their homes to cover legal costs after a collision.”

Currently it is not a legal requirement to insure a scooter but this may be about to change with an EU directive known as the “Vnuk case”. If enacted by Parliament before or after Brexit, this may require all off-road vehicles including mobility scooters to be legally insured.

Therefore here at More Than Mobility we strongly recommend that you take out insurance on your mobility scooter as for as little as £86 per annum (only £1.66 per week) it will give you peace of mind.   Plus if you sign up today you can get an additional 3 months for FREE i.e. 15 months for the price of 12 months.  Choice of standard or plus cover available.

Your mobility scooter insurance covers many things from fire, storm, flood, loss or damage due to theft as well as public liability and personal injury benefit due to an accident.  It can also include 24/7 breakdown recovery dependent on package taken.

Please visit our website for the full range of mobility insurance we offer. If you need insurance for more than one year we have two and three years cover available.

National Road Victim Month

Sunday, August 13th, 2017 by morethan

The national road safety charity RoadPeace organises National Road Victim Month every August to remember those killed or injured on the roads. August is a particularly poignant month since the first person ever killed in the UK by a car, Bridget Driscoll, died on 17 August 1896 and also this month will be the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales who was killed in a car crash in Paris, 1997.  Also during August there is an increased risk of children being injured or killed while on holiday from school.

Get involved in the subject at #NationalRoadVictimsMonth.  As well as honouring people that have been lost and injured, it is also a great opportunity to raise awareness to make our roads safer. RoadPeace hold events during August in memorial to those lost in roads crashes, however you can also do your bit to raise awareness for safer driving by having your own event.

Travelling with a Mobility Scooter on a Plane

Tuesday, August 1st, 2017 by morethan

It’s the summer holiday season but concerned about taking your mobility scooter abroad with you and on a plane  – how easy is it and is it safe?

If you are planning a trip abroad check out these useful tips and information on taking a mobility scooter on a airplane:

  • Most airlines will be more than happy to take your mobility scooter on board.  However if it important to check with the airline you are flying with (ideally before you book) if the airline has restrictions relating to equipment – these can vary depending on who you fly with.
  • You need to book in advance with the airline for your mobility scooter to go with you on the plane.  We recommend that you should tell your airline, travel agent or tour operator as soon as possible if you’re taking on a battery-powered wheelchair or mobility scooter.   Don’t just turn up at the airport and expect to take your mobility scooter with you as you might not be able to.
  • The official government guidelines state that if you are travelling to a European airport and have a disability, then you can travel with up to two items of mobility equipment free of charge.  They should not be counted as part of your baggage allowance (depending on size).
  • You will need to give the airline some information in advance about the mobility equipment, including its make, weight, size and model.  This is to enable that is loaded and stowed safely during the flight and it is not a fire risk.
  • You might also want to take the operating manual with you including details on how it collapses (if possible) as this could be useful for the airline staff and prevents any issues when loading your equipment into the hold.
  • You will not be able to take your own wheelchair or mobility scooter into the passenger cabin of a plane – it will be stored in the hold. Speak to your airline to find out what help they’ll provide when boarding.
  • Don’t forget to take your mobility scooter battery charger and a suitable plug for the country you are flying to.  Also it might be worth taking a spare key with you – just in case!
  • Check the local laws for driving mobility scooters in the country you are visiting – they can vary from country to country so it’s important to familiarise yourself with any differences.
  • We recommend that you travel with a companion if you are not self-reliant, e.g. you need help with feeding, breathing, using medication or using the toilet. The airline you’re flying with will do their best to make sure you sit next to each other, so long as you tell them at least 48 hours before departure.

At More Than Mobility we sell a range of portable mobility scooters that would be suitable to take away with you whilst travelling. Do take a look at our portable mobility scooter range including the best-selling Mobie Foldable Portable Mobility Scooter – one of the smallest, lightest, quickest assembled compact mobility scooter on the market!
