Mobility Scooter Service/Health Check

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018 by morethan

Wow what glorious weather we are having this week (about time too!) and as it is gets warmer by the day you will probably be out and about more, so we recommend you have a mobility scooter health check so you don’t have any issues when you are out and about this spring/summer.

Your mobility scooter or electric wheelchair manual outlines the basic maintenance that your mobility scooter or powerchair requires. Like a car, your mobility equipment requires an annual service. The service will check the mechanical operation of the scooter as well as your batteries, and will ensure that everything is functioning as it should.

Here are More Than Mobility our service engineers are fully manufacturer qualified so we can organise a service for you at a time of your convenience.

Some general tips on checking your mobility scooter or electric wheelchair:

Cleaning

  • Wash off any dirt and dust
  • Keep your mobility scooter as dry as possible – this will help prevent rust.

Weather Protection

  • In wet weather it’s a good idea to have protective covers for yourself and your mobility scooter to stay dry.  Especially important for those April showers!
  • Storage covers are handy for keeping the dust and rain off your mobility scooter whilst not in use. Mobility scooter stores have a more rigid frame and will stand up to being left out in strong conditions and have additional security features.

Batteries

  • Batteries need to be charged regularly to keep them working efficiently. Always adhere to the battery manufacturer’s guidelines; they typically recommend charging for between 8 and 10 hours at a time and even if you are not using your mobility product on a daily basis we recommend that you charge the batteries at least twice per week.
  • Only use the charger that you have been supplied with your mobility scooter or powerchair.  Using an incompatible battery charger is likely to be detrimental to battery life.  If you need a new charger then let us know and we can get one sent out to you.
  • During cold weather and when the mobility scooter is not in use, the batteries will gradually lose their charge and could decay if they are left in a discharged state.
  • New mobility scooter and powerchair batteries start from as little as £55 per pair.

Tyres

  • All tyres will wear and tear, inspect them regularly to check they are still safe.

Service

  • It is recommended that you have your mobility scooter serviced by a qualified engineer every year, especially if it is used on the road.
  • Many of the key working parts of a mobility scooter are hidden beneath the body shell and require specialist knowledge and tools to access.
  • It is important to remember that a mobility scooter still has critical safety elements such as brakes which need to be checked. This is even more important on class 3 scooters that are used on the road at higher speeds.

Here at More Than Mobility; we repair and service all makes of mobility products both purchased or not purchased from us.  Our nationwide chains of local engineers is on hand and are available to help with any repairs, services or new batteries that you require on your mobility products.  Alternatively we also sell brand new mobility scooters if you thinking of upgrading to a new one from as little as £550.

If you have any problems please give us a call on 0800 046 3949 and we can arrange for a local engineer to come to your home to repair it or give your product a service.

Best wishes

Renovating Your Home For Old Age

Thursday, March 1st, 2018 by morethan

Nearly 90% of older people say they want to live at home for as long as possible, so making your home accessible now is in your best interest. Here are some ideas to consider implementing in your home—just remember to consult with a professional before attempting any major construction.

Easy changes you can implement now

1) Install grab bars in the shower or toilet. All bathrooms can benefit from the addedsecurity a grab bar provides.   Grab bars start from as little as £5.99.

2) Install a shower seat. Standing in the shower for a long period of time can be tiring for older adults. A foldable shower seat can give them a needed rest, and can be stowed away when not in use.

3) Replace doorknobs with lever handles. Lever handles are much easier to operate than traditional doorknobs for those with arthritis and other hand ailments.

4) Install recessed lighting that illuminates cabinets and counter tops. Installing task lighting to brighten work spaces in kitchens, laundry rooms and closets is a great way to improve living spaces for elders. You could install recessed lighting directly into your rooms.

5) Install sensor lighting at each entry. This is a good safety feature for any house, but can especially help older occupants with impaired night time vision feel secure at home.

More intensive renovation options

6) Have a light switch at every entrance to a room. And make sure the switch can be reached from a wheelchair.

7) Have visual contrast at every level change, including steps. This will help the vision-impaired avoid trips and falls.

8 ) Replace old hardwood or tiles with slip resistant flooring. Pay special attention to high-use areas like entryways and high-risk areas like bathrooms and kitchens.

9) Install a walk-in shower or wet room. Even minor changes in elevation can be hazardous for those with mobility problems so consider a walk in shower or wet room.   Call today for a free no obligation quote.

10) Install a stair lift – this can greatly improve your independence, and allow you to continue living in, and indeed enjoying, all the areas of your home.  Call today for a free no obligation quote.

Top 5 Tips to Prevent a Cold

Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 by morethan

At More Than Mobility we’ve learned that you’ve got to act fast to fight of cold and flu so we’ve put together this guide on the some of the best ways ward off cold.

Depend on over-the-counter relief

The best medication to soothe a cold might surprise you: over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen. Most people don’t think of it, but they treat sore throat pain, sinus pain, muscle aches and pains, chills, fever and headaches.

Staying topped up on your fruit and veg intake to get all your vitamins is one of the best ways to keep your immune system tip top. Not only do they keep you healthy and aid digestion but they provide all the nutrients to fight colds.

Sip tea

Fresh lemon, honey and hot water is always a good way to fight a cold as the lemonthins mucus and honey is antibacterial. Menthol and herbal green teas are also great immune system boosters. Breathing in the steam from a hot cup of tea is a great way to stimulate the hair follicles in your nose which gets germs moving out more efficiently.  It always important to stay hydrated, especially with the sniffles, if tea isn’t your favourite, stay topped up on water!

Wash and sanitise

Wash your hands regularly and especially after being in contact with anyone who does have a cold. Send those germs down the drain with plenty of hand wash and hot water. Hand sanitisers are also a great way to avoid unwanted germs on the go. If you are not a fan of the chemical-y clean smell, there are many water-based solutions available that are fresh and unscented.

Disinfect

Cold germs can live for hours so think about disinfecting areas like worktops, doorknobs, toilet handles and remote controls.

Cold germs are spread really easily over surfaces. You really need to use a bleach to kill the virus rather than an anti-bacterial spray. Don’t obsess, though, as there’s no way you can make a normal household completely sterile.

Curl up in bed with a nice hot water bottle

Many studies have found a connection between sleep deprivation and a higher incidence of colds. When you’re tired, it’s harder to work efficiently. That’s how your immune system feels when it has to fight of viruses without ample rest.

How to Choose a Walking Frame

Monday, February 19th, 2018 by morethan

Walking frames are designed for people who need more support than a cane provides, but who do not require a wheelchair. walking frameWalkers allow you to place more weight on your arms, instead of your legs, and also assist with support and balance.

Most walking frames or Zimmer frames have the same basic design – four legs and a lightweight frame.  Walking frames are also available with wheels on the two front legs.

Hinged front leg frame

This design has the front section of the frame on a hinge with the back section of the frame. The folding mechanism is activated by pulling a ball which is mounted on a piece of string. When this ball is pulled towards you, the brace bar which runs around the bottom of the frame slides up. At the same time the front section moves inwards until the front and back legs meet.

This type of mechanism is easy and intuitive to use but does not result in a completely flat frame when folded. However, it does reduce the size sufficiently to get the frame into a car boot or to store in a wardrobe for example.

Side folding frame

This type of folding Zimmer frame has a different frame to the traditional Zimmer. Instead of the frame narrowing to the front, these frames are the same width at the front as they are at the back. To fold the frame, a locking catch must be depressed using the palm of your hand on the bar which runs across the front of the frame. This allows each side to be folded in to meet the front section. When folded, this type of frame is flat and more space efficient.

Forearm Zimmer Frames

This type of frame is essentially the same as a standard Zimmer but with forearms troughs rather than handgrips. This allows you to transfer the weight through your forearms rather than your hands. This will be particularly helpful if you have painful or arthritic hands and find gripping the frame difficult. The position of the trough and the upright hand grips are adjustable.

Reciprocal Zimmer Frames

A reciprocal Zimmer frame operates with a pivot mechanism for each side. This allows you to lift up and move forward one side of the frame at a time. This tends to be more in step with how you walk naturally and may feel more intuitive to use. However, careful consideration should be given to how much weight is being placed on the frame and whether having one arm forward of the other may create difficulties.

Online Services from the NHS and Lloyds Pharmacy

There have been many reports this month of hospitals and doctor surgeries being full and herenhs at More Than Mobility we want to help alleviate this situation and share some services offered by the NHS and Lloyds Pharmacy that you could use instead if it not an emergency.

A report in the Telegraph states – “NHS Providers said there was now very little give in the system, warning of shortages of paramedics, GPs, and A&E consultants and nurses”.

Also recent television reports shows people calling for ambulance assistance when an ambulance is not necessarily needed and a visit to the local chemist or arranging a doctor’s appointment would have sufficed.

The 111 app run by the NHS and has recently introduced the brand new way to use NHS 111 online in selected areas in the country. Simply download NHS 111 from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Lloyds’ pharmacy has an online doctor service and offer prescription-only treatmentsonline without needing to see a doctor face to face. Watch the video on how the service works.

Lloyds’ can also arrange for NHS repeat prescription to be delivered to your door for FREE!

  • Free Sign Up, Free Reminders, Free Delivery
  • Supported By Our Expert Pharmacy Team
  • Hassle Free & Convenient
  • Safe, Secure & Discreet
