Silver Sunday, This Sunday 4th October 2015

Friday, October 2nd, 2015 by morethan

This Sunday is Silver Sunday; an annual day of fun and free activities for older people across the UK. Led by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation, it celebrates the value and knowledge they contribute to our communities while combating loneliness and isolation. Everyone can get involved, whether that’s organising an event, spreading the word, or simply attending an activity.

“This is a special day for older people to get involved in community events and activities to bring back some of the traditional community spirit. It’s also a small thank you for your contribution to society.”   Joanna Lumley

Silver Sunday is set to be even bigger and better with events happening right across the UK. From concerts to museum tours, cycle rides to chocolate tastings, there will be something for everyone.   Do take a look at the event calendar to see if an event is happening near you. Events include:

Also the Bright Life Festival is taking place this week from 1st to 8th October.  A week-long festival that showcases the central and valued role older people play in their communities whilst bringing generations together through a range of social activities and celebration events.

For some of the events you need to book so be quick as places are going fast.

Alternatively if you cannot attend an event but still want to be involved; do check out the various ways you can get involved:

We wish you all great fun for this weekend’s activities and do share your stories with us next week.

It’s Spring and Now Time To Check Your Mobility Scooter or Electric Wheelchair Batteries!

Thursday, April 9th, 2015 by morethan

The sun is shining but before you go out for your leisurely ride through the fields or park; make sure to remember to double check your mobility scooter battery and your mobility scooter or electric wheelchair. Looking after and regularly charging your batteries will increase the maximum performance of your mobility product. Batteries are likely to need replacing every 2- 3 years, although you may be able to use them for longer if you take care and check them regularly.

Some general advice for checking and maintain your batteries are:
  • Regularly charge your battery (ideally every day after use) and even if you are not using your mobility product we recommend that you charge the battery at least twice per week.
  • Do not interrupt charging. In other words, be sure that the batteries are fully charged before you take them off charge.  This can take up to 8 hours.
  • Only use the charger that has been supplied with your mobility scooter or powerchair. Using an incompatible battery charger is likely to be detrimental to battery life.
  • Dampness can be harmful to all batteries – If your mobility product gets sodden with rainwater, it is a good idea to remove the batteries and wipe them down with a dry cloth before replacing.
  • Extreme temperatures can have a very detrimental effect on the life of your batteries – so it is important that you store them in a suitable place if you are not going to use the vehicle for a prolonged period.

If you need help with servicing your mobility scooter or checking & replacing batteries do give us a

call on 0800 046 3949 and we can arrange for a local engineer to come to your home to repair, replace it or give your product an annual service. Not sure which battery you need for your Mobility Scooter or Electric Wheelchair? When replacing your battery we have made life easier for you by creating a simple table which shows you the battery size you need, next to your mobility scooter or electric wheelchair make and model. Mobility Offer Extended! Finally we have extended our Spring £5 OFF when you spend over £100 on any mobility products until 30th April 2015. Please quote SPRING15 when ordering online or by phone to receive this offer.

How To Maintain your Mobility Scooter This Winter

Monday, February 2nd, 2015 by morethan

It does not seem like the extremely cold weather we have been having will be easing up any time soon. We would therefore like to highlight the importance of the maintenance and storage of your mobility scooter. The correct storage of your mobility scooter during the winter months will help ensure that it is ready to go whenever you would like to use it and save you money from unnecessary bills.

Here at More Than Mobility We have Created Some Useful Tips On How To Keep Your Mobility Scooter In Tip Top Condition:

We recommend that you regularly clean your mobility scooter after you use it in order to get rid of any mud, oil or salt that may have been picked up during your travels. This will help to delay any erosion that might occur like rust on metal. Cleaning your mobility scooter can also uncover any hidden faults or cracks.

Due to the bad and wet weather we have during winter, we recommended that you check your tyres for signs of wear and tear and replace if necessary. If your mobility scooter has pneumatic tyres you should ensure that they are pumped up to the correct pressure, which will help to give you added grip in slippery conditions.

It’s important that your get your mobility scooter serviced each year. We recommend that you do this before the winter to prevent any problems and ensuring that it is safe and reliable to use whatever the weather.  If you would like us to organise a service please call us on 0800 046 3949.

If you can only store your mobility scooter outside we recommend that you get a cover for it to protect it from the unpredictable weather. Here at More Than Mobility, we stock a wide range of scooter storage covers which are designed to be easy to use and are fully waterproof and are ideal for outside storage.  You can check out our Scooter & Wheelchair Accessories page.

If your mobility scooter’s battery can be removed it is a good idea to bring it inside during the winter. Cold and frosty conditions can degrade the life of the battery, those batteries which cannot be removed are usually tested in extreme conditions so should be fine to be left outside.

We recommend that you regularly check your mobility scooter batteries (especially if you have been a little lax with your battery charging protocol over the winter) – the number of calls relating to batteries that won’t start goes through the roof as soon as the weather improves.  Our mobility scooter batteries start from as little as £45 for a pair.

When you are going out and about do try and leave your battery charging until the last moment if you can. The cold conditions can reduce the range of your battery considerably, but leaving them on to charge will ensure a warm battery, which can help.

Out and about

Here at More Than Mobility we want you to travel comfortably in your mobility scooter, especially during the colder months. Wearing thermal and waterproof clothes will ensure that you are comfortable during your journey, and seat covers will ensure that your seat stays in good condition for years to come. High visibility clothing is also advised so that you are easily seen by other people during the darker days / nights.  For more information on our range of scooter accessories and clothing

Finally, please check the weather forecast before taking a journey and don’t take any unnecessary risks when it comes bad weather conditions.

Don’t Forget Your Mobility Insurance.

Monday, June 30th, 2014 by morethan

After watching the BBC documentary “the trouble with mobility scooters” and coming to the conclusion that mobility scooters are generally a good thing. They just need to be used wisely.  We still highly recommend that you take out mobility scooter insurance to cover you for any accidents or if you happen to breakdown. As mobility scooters are not classed as vehicles, you can’t get vehicle insurance for them. Not all mobility scooter sellers provide mobility scooter insurance, but we do! Cover starts from as little as £1.53 per week. Our mobility scooter insurance covers both mobility scooters and powerchairs.

See some of the benefits below:

  • Full 24/7 Breakdown Recovery
  • Fire, Theft and Vandalism – will cover the cost of repairing or replacing your product if it is unfortunately stolen or vandalised.
  • Accidental Damage – full cover against loss or accidental damage whatever the cause. Our insurance company will cover the cost of repairing your product if it is lost or damaged by any accidental cause including fire, storm, theft and vandalism.
  • Public and Personal Liability.
  • Personal Effects Cover
  • Loss of Keys

We offer insurance that can cover you between 1-3 years. It’s your choice!

Although mobility insurance is not compulsory yet, the Department of Transport states: ‘Although it is not a legal requirement, an insurance policy is strongly advised.”  We therefore recommend that you take out insurance on your wheelchair, mobility scooter or powerchair.  For more information click here or call us on 0800 046 3949.
