Wheelchair Tennis This Summer

Monday, July 10th, 2017 by morethan

Wimbledon Tennis Championships have begun and all eyes are yet again on Andy Murray and Jo Konta!    However we should not forget the growing popularity of wheelchair tennis and the ROMA SPORT National Wheelchair Tennis Series which caters for players of all abilities and is the entry-level tier of tournaments for wheelchair players in Great Britain.

All events are run by experienced, local organisers with the support of the Tennis Foundation. These tournaments are a great way to meet other wheelchair players in your region and give you the chance to test your game at a competitive level.

For new players, every tournament will have a novice division that is only for players who haven’t competed before, and will be a fun, supportive way to try out playing competitively for the first time.

The players with a bit more experience can enter the main draw and are able to gain points at each tournament according to their finishing position. At the end of year awards will be given to the top ranked male and female players in both singles and doubles.

Please click here for more information and the calendar of 2017 Roma Sport National Wheelchair Tennis Series tournaments.

Also if you are need of a new transit or self-propelled wheelchair please take a look at our More Than Mobility website as we have great offers on standard, lightweight and comfortable transit push wheelchair and self-propelling wheelchairs so do take a look at our range onlinePrices start from as little as £99!

Wimbledon and how to get involved in Wheelchair Tennis

Thursday, June 30th, 2016 by morethan

The most famous tennis championships have begun this week at Wimbledon and all eyes are on Andy Murray to see if he can become the men’s single champion once again.   To keep up to date with the latest news and scores you can visit the official website of the Wimbledon championships:

However it is not all about the Andy Murray and Jo Konta as during the championship the exciting game of wheelchair tennis events also take place.  Also for the first time ever there will be a wheelchair singles competition for both men and women to compliment the double wheelchair tennis events that have taken place for the last 10 years.

This is a great step forward and all of us here at More Than Mobility wish the competitors the best – especially the British ones!

Get involved in wheelchair tennis this summer!

However wheelchair tennis is not just for the elite and you too can get involved in this fast and exciting game!    See below on the rules and how to get involved.

A fully integrated sport, wheelchair tennis is similar to the able bodied game with the only modification being that an athlete can allow the ball to bounce twice before it is hit.

Who can participate?

Anyone with a permanent mobility related physical disability which results in substantial loss of function in one or both lower limbs is eligible to play wheelchair tennis. All disabled athletes compete together in singles or doubles events which makes the sportexciting due to the mix of disabilities. However, there are separate singles and doubles events for quadriplegics who have impairment in all four limbs.

How do I get involved – what’s near me?

For more information and to see what opportunities are near you and how to get involved please visit ITFTennis website.

Also further information is available at The Tennis Foundation or visit the WheelPower website.
